Happy Birthday, to me

Well I am turning 23 today.

It’s just 12 am now and I have already got a couple of phone calls from my friends. It’s really a nice feeling to know that some one remembers your birthday.

Thank you, guys for the wishes. You have really made my day bright.

WordPress 2.0.1

WordPress (my favorite blog software) has rolled up important bug fixes into a 2.0.1 release. It seems they have fixed about 114 bugs. You can read the details about these bugs in the milestone page.

If you are looking to upgrade your blog to 2.0.1 then you can refer to the Upgrading WordPress article.

I will be upgrading my blog, probably this weekend when I get some time, meanwhile if any one of you have upgraded then do let me know your experience.

Kill that comment spam

Off late my blog has been receiving lot of comment spam. Though most of them are caught by WordPress itself I still needed to manually delete them. I planned to install Captcha to overcome it but then dropped the plan since it might cause accessibility problems and even W3C doesn’t recommend it (and me being a guy who believes that a webpage should be accessible for all :)).

Luckily Akismet came to my rescue. Akismet is the brainchild of Matt Mullenweg, the maker of WordPress. It’s a wonderful spam killer and integrates well with WordPress and other bloging platforms too. Every comment left in the blog is sent to a web service filter which filters out the spam comments and the success rate is nearly 100%.

All you need to use it in your blog is just to enable it and enter the API key which you can get by registering with WordPress.com. And once you enable it you never have to worry about spam again.

It comes as a plugin with the default installation of WordPress, but I don’t know how I missed it all these days. You can also download it from Akismet.

So, one more reason for me to love WordPress.

Why I like WordPress

Recently I was explaining to someone the benefits of using WordPress over Blogger. And in the end that made me to think why I really like WordPress, particularly 2.0. So here are some of them, in no particular order.

  • Tons of plug-ins, themes, extensible, active community etc. (The general things about WordPress)
  • Ability to take backup from Dashboard itself with just a couple of mouse clicks
  • Rich text editing – Ok I know some of you are not happy about it.
  • One click import option – you will love it if you want to shift from blogger.
  • Nice fading technique, after you make some changes
  • AJAX touch to the UI, particularly in the Write page
  • Blogroll support – Easy importing of blogroll from an OPML file.
  • Category support
  • Ability to add my own pages in addition to blog posts. Yes.. I am talking about using WordPress
    as CMS
  • Trackbacks and pingbacks
  • Well integrated approach to upload and link to images or any other file
  • Post-it bookmarklet
  • Inbuilt theme editor
  • Hierarchical management of users
  • Excellent comment spam filtering – ability to backlist comment spam based on words, ip, user etc.

I am sure I have forgotten to mention some features which I love about WordPress and will add them to the list as and when I remember them.

BTW congrats to (the smart) Santhapa (My college met) for his new photo blog, which he plans to update daily. He is studing management (MBA) in IIT Madras (Chennai ?) and off late he has started to get his hands on photography. So guys if you want to check out photos taken by a waiting-to-be-written photographer then it’s available at here at his blog.

All the best smarty..

Gmail has a Delete button now

Finally Gmail has a ‘Delete’ button now.

Gmail Delete button

Just read about it in the ‘What’s New‘ page of Gmail. As with all other feature releases Google hasn’t yet added this button for every one. I think they are testing it out before they could enable it for everyone. Even I am yet to see it appear in my account.

I was waiting for long time for this. I had a doubt that this is going to happen when Google changed the text for the delete option.

But I would be still more happy if Google could introduce a new keyboard shortcut to delete a message in addition to the Delete button so that I need not take my had away from the keyboard.

Hmm, I think the feedback that I gave to Matt is really working. Keep it up Matt and don’t forget the keyboard shortcut in addition to the delete button.

Update: Delete button has started to appear in my account too.

Make Acrobat Reader load faster

I am a great fan of PDF documents and I am using Acrobat Reader right from version 4.0. But in the earlier versions I had only one complain. It used to take a long time for it to load. So I used to keep the main reader window open even if I am not reading a document so that then next time when I need to open a file I need not wait for it to load again.

But that has changed a lot in the latest version 7.0 of Acrobat Reader. Seriously Adobe has done some tweaks to make it load faster. But recently I found that it is loading lot of Plugin by default and a considerable amount of time can be reduced during loading if the optional Plugins are removed.

I was going through the installation directory of Acrobat Reader and found that there is an optional directory where we can put those Plugins which we do not want to load by default. This directory can be found in the following path (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\Optional) and the Plugin directory can be found in this path (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\plug_ins). I am assuming that you choose the default directory during installation. If you have installed it in a different directory then change the path accordingly.

The optional Plugins can be moved from the Plugin directory to the optional directory. Each Plugin can be identified but the extension (.api). But before doing that find out the Plugins which you are not going to use. You can see the list of Plugins and their dependencies in the Plugin’s page.

Click Help -> About Adobe Plugins.

areader1.GIF

You will see the following page.

areader2.GIF

From this page you can get a fair idea of Plugins that you don’t need and then move those corresponding .api files to the optional directory. While doing that please note that some Plugins may depend on other Plugins for loading. So if you get an error message stating that a particular Plugin was not able to load properly then restore the necessary Plugins. You will notice a significant improvement in the time taken for loading after moving the optional Plugins.

Here the list of Plugins which I have moved for your reference.

  • Accessibility.api – Acrobat Accessibility
  • Annots.api – Comments
  • AcroForm.api – Forms
  • MakeAccessible.api – MakeAccessible
  • Spelling.api – Spelling
  • soap.api – soap
  • Sendmail.api – Send Mail
  • reflow.api – Reflow
  • LegalPDF.api – Legal PDF
  • DigSig.api – Digital Signature
  • Multimedia.api – Multimedia
  • PPKLite.api – PPKLite
  • Updater.api – Updater
  • eBook.api – Adobe DRM
  • PDDom.api – PDCom
  • SaveAsRTF.api – Save as RTF
  • Checkers.api – Checkers

My site is up again

Continuing with my digital disasters my site also went down 🙁 and you know what, I didn’t had a backup. Yes I still have to learn the lesson. 🙁

It also thought me another lesson, never buy hosting from a cheap re-seller. I brought the original hosting account from a re-seller in eBay and I was happy for about a month but after that the company just disappeared overnight. To add salt to the wound I didn’t had a backup for my blog as well.

After that I bought another account from a reliable (?) hosting company and again took the pain to import the whole blog from blogger, like how I did it a month ago. But this time the new import option available in WordPress 2.0 was of real help (more on that for another day)

I was struck up with another problem after I imported. I only had posts which I wrote before I shifted to WordPress. Thanks to Google cache and Bloglines I was able to retrieve the posts which I wrote after I moved to WordPress and then I retrieved the comments from the email that were send by WordPress. So I was able to bring back my blog to the original state before it went down.

Thanks every one for the bearing with me during the downtime and for the support shown and wish you all a happy 2006.

Self Note: So two more resolutions for the New Year
1) Don’t buy hosting account from a cheap re-seller
2) Do take BACKUP of all important stuff.

Yahoo has got its Majo back

I have been waaay behind on blog reading for about two weeks now, thanks to my crashed Harddisk, lost mobile and work pressure. And today I got some time so I opened my bloglines and was skimming through the posts.

I was taken back a little when I found that there were lots of activities taking place at Yahoo.

Normally it will be Google who will be on the news for yet another new service, but now it

My new mobile

I just brought a new Sony Ericsson K700i mobile, since I lost my old one.

This one has all the features that I had in my old one (Sony Ericsson T630) plus lot of other ones too for the same price. The new features being Video recording, FM Radio and bigger storage space (41 MB) compared to just 2 MB which I had in my old one.

Lot of people suggested me to buy a Nokia mobile, but I became a Sony Ericsson fan after using one for about a year now.

I wanted to buy K750i but that was too costly. Hmm may be I will get it once I loose this one 😉

I have to buy a Bluetooth adapter so that I can connect my mobile with my PC and after that have to look for some software to backup up my contacts and also the pictures that I take using my mobile.

Can anyone suggest some good softwares which I can use to connect my mobile with PC.
