The events which I have attended or helped to organize. Like pipesCamp, WebCamp etc.

The Chennai Photowalk

It’s time to clean my camera, which has been idle for quite some time now. I am going to take part in the Chennai Photowalk on June 15th.

This is the eighth edition of the Chennai Photowalk which is going to be on both June 15th and 22nd. We will start at Panagal Park in T.Nagar and proceed in an easterly direction down Thyagaraya road, and end the walk at Residency towers. The initiative is by Chandrachoodan Gopalakrishnan and you can get more information from his blog. You can also browse photos of the previous photowalks in Flickr.

For me, this is the first time to be part of a photowalk and so I am really excited. If you are in Chennai and ready to sacrifice a Sunday evening, then please do come. You don’t need to have an expensive camera; there are people who are going to shoot using their mobile cameras itself. πŸ˜‰

Update: You can find the photos which I took during the PhotoWalk in Flickr. There are lot of teddies out there πŸ˜‰

Time to strip down again

Like 2006 and 2007, I am going to participate in this year’s CSS Naked day too. This year the date has been changed to April 9th.

If you are wondering what is CSS Naked day, then this is the definition from the official site

The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. Plain and simple. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words. It’s time to show off your <body>.

If even you want to participate then register your site in the official site and then strip the CSS from your site. If you are on WordPress then you can use this plugin.

Happy stripping πŸ˜‰

Back from WebCamp

I attended WebCamp today as planned. It was good and there were talks about web frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Groovy on Grails, Django, Flex etc. Unfortunately I was not able to give my talk about jQuery as planned due to some issues with the timings. I was pretty disappointed at first; since it took me considerable amount of time to prepare for the presentation and added to that I drove for more than two hours to attend the event. Anyway that’s life isn’t? πŸ˜‰ You will never know what life has for you the next second. If everything goes as planned, then life would be as dull as a recorded circket match. It is uncertainty which gives life to life (wow! I can make a quote too πŸ˜‰ ).

Anyways to be positive I learned a lot of new things about jQuery when I did my research to prepare for the presentation, even though I have been using it for the past couple of months. Hope you guys also find my slides about jQuery useful.

WebCamp – An unconference about web frameworks

One of the organizers of pipesCamp, Prabhu, is organizing another unconference called WebCamp in Chennai. WebCamp is an unconference (like BarCamp) to discuss about the advantages, disadvantages and correct uses of various web frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Django etc. So if you are crazy about Web 2.0 and live in Chennai then be sure to attend. More over it is going to be a pure technical event without any non-technical people so as to concentrate on highly technical stuff.

I am planning to talk about Client side frameworks, mostly about jQuery. If you want to attend or give a presentation just add your name in the wiki and spread the word. You can add the tag WebCamp or WebCampChennai to your blog posts, Flickr photos, Slideshare slides etc.

Photos from pipesCamp

As promised here are some of the photos taken during the pipesCamp event which I attended two weeks back. After failing to find a way to directly embed photos from Flickr, I am now hotlinking them.

Yahoo Pipes Team writes about pipesCamp

I was really very surprised when I found that the Yahoo Pipes team has blogged about pipesCamp, which I attended two weeks back.

Even the Yahoo Developer Network carried an article about pipesCamp. The article also mentioned the Yahoo! Pipes hack – ego Search, which I built together with Yuvi and Harish. Very nice feeling to see something which you helped build was featured by big boys like Yahoo. πŸ˜‰

It was really very nice to know that the event which was organized in less than a week was such a success. Imagine how it would have been if we had more time πŸ˜‰

Embedding Flickr Photos in WordPress

I found some great photos on Flickr which were taken during pipesCamp, which I attended last week. I tried to embed them in this blog, but couldn’t figure out how to do it. I have to admit that I am not a Flickr power user. I have been trying for almost an hour now and so I thought of seeking the help of my readers.

Can anyone please let me know how to get the HTML code from Flickr to embed individual photos in other websites? I don’t want to hotlink directly to the picture but want to get the HTML code like youtube. I know picasa provides this option. I could even get hold of a screenshot of the HTML embed code in Flickr, but the author is discussing about a different issue.

So any Flickr power user out there who can help me?

Meanwhile you can check out the pipesCamp photos directly from Flickr.

Back from pipesCamp

As planned, I attended pipesCamp yesterday and it was really worth the time spent. As planned, I took Yuvi with me and he started to click his camera on the way itself, and he got some 35 – 40 snaps before we could reach there. (Yuvi, I know that your computer has crashed, but I am waiting for your photos to appear in Flickr as soon as possible. πŸ˜‰ )

I meet lot of cool people there and true to the unconference style we had a couple of presentations about Yahoo Pipes (and some slides from the official Yahoo pipes team itself) and then some open discussions about pipes and blogging in general.

Then towards the end of the day we had “hackday” kind of competition and we were given 60 minutes to design/code a pipe and then 3 minutes to demonstrate the demo. Myself, Yuvi and Harish got together and created a pipe called “Ego Search“. (Harish, thanks for the laptop πŸ™‚ )

Ego Search is a pipe for finding out how popular you are on the web, based on search results from popular search engines. The popularity chart is drawn based on the number of search results that point to your blog or domain name for your name. And if your name is say ‘xyz’, a 100 point popularity rating on the graph says that you are the most populous ‘xyz’ that the search engine knows. You can try out the pipe in this url http://pipes.yahoo.com/sudar/egosearch. We also had some great pipes like MTC Mashup created by other cool people.

On the whole the first ever pipesCamp went very well. I will post links to photos and videos once they are available.

By the way anyone planning for the first ever WordCamp in India?

pipesCamp

The guys behind hover.in (more about it later) are organizing a one day unconference event called pipesCamp for Yahoo Pipes hackers and hobbyists in Chennai. Yahoo Pipes is an excellent and useful tool from Yahoo.

I am going to save some typing by copy/pasting information about Pipes from the Pipes home page.

Pipes is a powerful composition tool to aggregate, manipulate, and mashup content from around the web.

Like Unix pipes, simple commands can be combined together to create output that meets your needs:

  • combine many feeds into one, then sort, filter and translate it.
  • geocode your favorite feeds and browse the items on an interactive map.
  • power widgets/badges on your web site.
  • grab the output of any Pipes as RSS, JSON, KML, and other formats.

The event is taking place on December 23 and you can find more information about the event from its home page. There seems to be lot of interesting things planed for the event including a hackday type event.

So if you are Chennai then make sure that you don’t miss it. The event is taking place at

Hotel Shan Royal
85, Poonamallee High Road,
Near Koyambedu Circle, Chennai , India

And here is the place on Google Maps.

I am planning to take Yuvi with me, so you are sure to get some interesting photographs too πŸ™‚

Happy Piping.
