Uploading Videos into iPod

Quite a few of my friends asked me how to upload video into iPod. So instead of explaing to each and every one of them separately I thought of writing about it and then directing them here.

First if you want to play the video in your iPod then it must be in MP4 file format. If you already have your files in this format then you can add it to your iTunes library by just drag and drop. If it is not then you must use a Video converter to convert it into the MP4 file format.

Luckily there is a software called Free iPod Video Converter which does exactly the same and more over it’s free. Download it from its website and install it. You can add the files which need to be converted by just drag and drop and then select the appropriate parameters (99% of the time you don’t need to change anything.)

Then enter the tags for your video file and click ok

Now click convert button and you are done.

After the conversion process you can just add the generated file to your iTunes library and then it will get automatically uploaded to your iPod the next time you connect it.

Other useful converters from the same company – Jodix

And most of them have the similar GUI and operation.

hey, i wus wondering if theres a difference between .mp4 and .m4v cuz iTunes always wants to convert the .mp4 to .m4v, thats fun but it takes FOREVER and the resulting file is like, 4 times as huge with 4 times as less quality…

  • Sudar says:

    Hello Geogre,

Even I am not sure why iTunes convers .mp4 to .m4v. Will let you know about it if I get some info on it.

For some reason the files I converted will not import into ITunes, I don’t get an error message or anything, they just dont show up after I click them, and even worse know the songs I try to upload arent updating to my Ipod either..am I just that Ipod illiterate?

      Hi all,

I just happened to come across this site when I faced a small issue with my iPod and a huge movie. Basically, I was trying to copy (drag & drop) a huge movie file from my system (directly converted to MP4 from a DVD) to my iPOD. But, it just didn’t copy (like Veronica & the others mentioned earlier).

These are a few things I tried.

      1. Copy it to iTunes Library and tried playing it. It worked without any sign of a problem.

      2. Tried playing it on QuickTime on my system. It worked.

      3. Tried copying some other MP4 file, a smaller one to my iPOD. It worked.

      4. Tried copying another huge MP4 file I ripped from a VCD. It worked beautifully.

And now, for the best part. The Major Finding…
MP4 has a few format variants. The file extension may be bluntly read “MP4” in Windows but it doesn’t mean every MP4 file will play on your iPOD. Some won’t even copy (as it happened in my case) and iTunes will turn a blind eye.

Some converters have “MP4 (iPod)” listed as a format for conversion alongside just “MP4”. Make sure you select “MP4 (iPod)” to convert your files to MP4 (if you want to play it on your iPod that is).

      Oh! Btw, FYI: –
      I use, Win XP SP2.
iTunes 7.0.2.16 (installed in 2007) – No worries so far.
      A few MP4 Converters.

      Hope this helps.

      God Bless!

      Regards,
      BGP.

  • Sudar says:

    Hi Veronica,

Are you sure that you converted them to the right format. Were they audio or video files?

    Cheers,
    Sudar

  • VERONICA says:

They were video files, and Im pretty sure that they were converted correctly, when I view the properties of the files in that folder I created they say that they are MP4. It has gotten to the point that Itunes wont even show mp3s that I am trying to add to my library. I will go through the whole process, (file>import) but when I click “open” to add the file, it doesnt show up in my library, but Itunes doesnt give me an error or anything to let me know what is going on. Could it be my version of Itunes?

  • Sudar says:

    Hi Veronica,

Your problem seems to be very peculiar.

Are you able to add other files to the library? BTW which version of iTunes are you using and are you in PC or in MAC?

    Cheers,
    Sudar

I am having the same problem as Veronica I was able to convert my video files to mp4, but when i add it to I tunes it would not show up in my library, but does not show any error message. What am I doing wrong? p.s i have i tunes 4

  • Sudar says:

    Hi Kloey,

This happened to me also, when I tried to convert certain files. I guess it is a bug with the program. But when I tried to convert them again, it worked.

    Cheers,
    Sudar
